Planned Gifts
Planned giving provides the opportunity for every donor to make an extraordinary gift to a cause that is important to them. Each year, planned gifts provide essential funding for the important research, programs and patient care provided at Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.
Many donors dream of leaving a legacy to our hospital but feel that they may not have the ability to do so during their lifetime. Planned Giving is the answer - it provides a careful way to make a significant gift that is tax-effective and balances the donor’s financial needs with their charitable goals.
Our planned giving team will work with you and your family and your financial advisors, when appropriate, in a confidential way to ensure your family, professional and philanthropic goals are met.
Planned Giving donors do their part today to ensure that our hospital will continue to provide the highest quality of care for the patients of tomorrow.
For more information on planning a gift, please, contact Zita Longobardi, at 902-465-8560
Bequests The easiest way to make a planned gift is by leaving a bequest to Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation in your will. Planning for a bequest enables the donor to make a significant gift to our Hospital while having little or no effect on their current lifestyle.
Through a gift in your will, you can leave a specific amount of money or a percentage of the residue of your estate. Please discuss your wishes with members of your family and seek the advice of your financial planner or legal counsel.
Giving through Life Insurance There are many creative ways to support our hospital through a gift of Life Insurance. You can name Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation as the beneficiary to an existing or new policy or donate a paid-up policy. The members of the planned giving team at Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation would be pleased to work with you to determine the best way to meet your philanthropic goals balanced with your family and personal needs.
Life Income Gifts Life income gifts provide you with the opportunity to support the cause you believe in today with the opportunity to provide income for the remainder of your lifetime. All life income gifts should be discussed with a financial advisor. The members of the planned giving team at Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation would be pleased to work with your and your financial advisor to best determine if a life income gift would be the best way for you to support our hospital.
Charitable Gift Annuities Charitable Gift Annuities can provide tax-free income that typically exceeds income earned by a Guaranteed Income Certificate (GIC). In coordination with your financial planner and Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation, the donor purchases an annuity from an insurance company and receives 100% tax free income for life. The Foundation receives approximately one quarter of the full annuity value and the remaining is used to purchase the annuity from a secure life insurance company. The amount of income that the donor receives is calculated based on the age and life expectancy determined at the time of the annuity purchase.
Charitable Remainder Trusts A Charitable Remainder Trust is a deferred gift arrangement in which a donor transfers property (cash, securities or real estate) to a trust. The donor retains the right to the income generated from the Trust either for life or for a specified number of years. Afterwards, the remainder of the trust is transferred to Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation. Such a gift should be discussed with your family and your financial advisor and/or legal counsel.
Gifts of Residual Interest A gift of residual interests offers a donor the opportunity to make a gift of real estate or other personal property, receive a donation receipt for their gift and retain the use of the property during their lifetime. Donors will receive a donation receipt for the present value of the gift so long as it is irrevocably gifted to Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation. This type of giving should be discussed with your family and your financial advisor and/or legal counsel.
Gifts of Securities
Gifts of stock maybe an ideal way to make a significant contribution to the hospital. Recent changes in the federal budget eliminates the capital gains tax on donation of publically traded securities to charities. Capital gains do not have to be included as part of the donor's income if the stock is donated directly to the hospital foundation.
