Meet Dartmouth General

MeetDartmouth General

The Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation’s (DGH Foundation) sole mission is to support innovation and exceptional care at the Dartmouth General by connecting with those who believe in the hospital and the communities it serves.

Since its inception in 1975, the DGH Foundation has invested more than $60 million in new equipment, facilities, and programs at Dartmouth General. In 2018, generous donors to the Above and Beyond campaign supported Dartmouth General’s expansion by helping the DGH Foundation raise more than $13 million, leveraging $137 million provided by the provincial government. With eight new operating rooms, new clinical space, more exam and procedure rooms and state-of-the-art equipment, Dartmouth General Hospital is now one of the most modern hospitals in the province. The hospital is also home to the Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care and has recently been given the regional hospital designation.

In 2024, we completed the $15 million Lead On Campaign, raising more than $15.8 million. The Lead On Campaign supported Dartmouth General’s first MRI unit, an orthopedic robot and other high-priority equipment, including a state-of-the-art Moses 2.0 Holmium Laser for prostate care. Priorities also included a first-in-Atlantic-Canada pelvic health suite and health equity initiatives like the creation of bursaries for African Nova Scotian students pursuing careers in healthcare. The campaign also supported a patient essentials fund to ensure more patients have the resources they need to safely go back to their homes and enhance their recovery after a hospital stay.

Dartmouth General Hospital will be celebrating 50 years of service to our community in 2026. We began as a small community hospital, built through the advocacy and efforts of the late Dr. Wylie Verge and a group of determined citizens. Almost 50 years later, our hospital prides itself on maintaining its community feel and special culture – a culture of collaboration, respect, and can-do philosophy. We are a hospital built by community, for the health and service of community.
