Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the newly redeveloped Dartmouth General Hospital and our exciting plans for the future.

The DGH started out as a community hospital almost 50 years ago. It was the vision of a group of family doctors who practiced in Dartmouth and the vision came to life through their efforts and the efforts of the community. To this day, community involvement remains critical to the hospital’s success. Volunteers, donors, and community partners contribute to making our hospital one we can all be proud of. Just a 10km drive from Burnside, the Dartmouth General Hospital also serves the 2000+ Burnside Businesses and their 30,000+ employees.

The Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care

Housed in the Dartmouth General’s New Neville Gilfoy Wing, the Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care has 2 ortho-dedicated operating rooms and seven orthopedic surgeons performing the majority of HRM’s joint replacement procedures.

The introduction of an orthopedic robot for joint replacement surgery will be a game changer for Dartmouth General and the entire province!

The Orthopedic Robot allows the surgeon to precisely plan joint replacements, custom-fit to patient’s anatomy. This results in:

  • Smaller Incisions, less scarring, reduced blood loss, fewer post-op infections
  • Higher patient satisfaction rates, reduced number of revision surgeries
  • Faster recovery times, allowing patients to return to their lives sooner
