“What an amazing crew at the DGH”
Educator, meteorologist, writer Richard Zurawski ended 2025 with hip replacement surgery at Dartmouth General Hospital. He documented the experience on social media, giving thanks to his medical team.
“The surgeon, the support staff, the nurses, the physiotherapist, the pharmacist the whole medical system comes together in the most amazing way,” says Richard. “I wanted to share my experience because everything appears to be going exactly the way it’s supposed to be. We actually had friends visit two days after the surgery and I was able to sit up with them in the living room.”
Richard had previously had surgery on his other hip and his shoulder.
“Exercise is a really important part of my life and getting back to mobility is crucial,” he says. “I’ve been in pain for four years and this is the first time that I am out of pain. In your mid-70s you start to realize that the sands of time are getting finer and fewer so you want to make the best that you can with what you’ve got left.”
Thank you to Richard for sharing his story, hearing from patients helps DGH grow and can help comfort other patients in similar situations. If you would like to share your story, please e-mail Info.dghfoundation@dghfoundation.ca
