BMO makes $100,000 gift to Dartmouth General Hospital in support of first-ever MRI
MRI Machine with Orthopedic Package will Provide Crucial and Timely Diagnostic Imaging for Patients across the Halifax Regional Municipality
Today, as part of Giving Tuesday, the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation celebrated a gift from BMO for $100,000 in support of its new 1.5T MRI Machine, which will be housed in a newly renovated 1,100 square foot space in the Diagnostic Imaging department of the hospital. The state-of-the-art machine will significantly increase capacity and improve access for MRI patients in the Central Zone.
DGH’s first-ever MRI is entirely donor funded – an incredible demonstration of support from the community. Today’s $100,000 gift from BMO is part of Dartmouth General’s ‘Lead On’ Campaign focused on driving patient-centred innovation. BMO joins other leading donors including the Calder Family, the J & W Murphy Foundation, MICCO, and Joseph and Violet Diab, who were the first donors to the new MRI unit.
MRI scans are non-invasive medical imaging tests that produce detailed images of almost every internal structure in the human body, including the organs, bones, muscles and blood vessels. Dartmouth General’s new MRI will be equipped with a special orthopedics package to support the work of The Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care. It is also a “wide bore” machine, with a 70cm opening versus a standard machine with a 60cm opening, making for a more comfortable patient experience.
The addition of this MRI in the Central Zone will reduce the need for patients to travel to other zones for their scans, which will make accessing care much easier for people. Construction of the new suite is underway, and the MRI unit will be lowered into the building through an opening in the roof before the end of the year. First scans are estimated for spring 2024.
